Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that half of all adults have difficulties with some sort of headache problem, so this really isn’t unexpected. One of the most common sorts of headaches which our patients suffer from is cervicogenic headache which, luckily, chiropractic can often help.
Cervicogenic Headaches Defined
A cervicogenic headache is one that comes from a problem in the cervical spine. It can be a result of a condition with either the spine itself (particularly, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it could be due to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine creates constriction or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can give you headache pain.
How can you find out if the headache you are experiencing is a cervicogenic headache? Other than receiving a diagnosis from a healthcare professional, a typical symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is occasionally coupled with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.
How Chiropractic Helps with Cervicogenic Headaches
Since cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever problem is causing them is corrected, it is critical to receive treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective solution, and one that can provide a considerable amount of pain relief.
In one study printed in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers looked at 80 people who had repeated cervicogenic headaches. Half of them were given chiropractic care and the other 50% underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was found that chiropractic offered the most beneficial outcomes.
Specifically, this study revealed that chiropractic adjustments offered patients enhanced pain relief and reduced the frequency of headaches that occurred. Additionally, it also reduced the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
