Prevent Back Pain

Jul 05, 2022

Our Henderson chiropractors have a few simple steps you can take each day to help keep your back strong, healthy, and pain free.

Keep fit. By reducing your weight, you’ll reduce pressure on your spine and nerves. Maintaining a healthy weight also decreases problems with your knees and foot pain.

Exercise daily. Strive for at least 30-60 minutes a day. Stronger core muscles support more weight, reducing pressure on your back.

Empty your pockets. Sitting on bulky wallets can cause “credit card sciatica.” Putting pressure on your sciatic nerve can cause pain in your lower back and legs.

Bend carefully. When you tie your shoes, for instance, go to one knee instead of bending over.

Stop smoking. Nicotine restricts the flow of blood to the cushioning discs between your vertebrae, so avoid smoking or chewing tobacco.

Lift carefully. When lifting heavy objects, keep the item close to you, and use your legs and knees, not your back, to lift. To support your back when lifting, you may also consider wearing a lifting belt.

Use a pillow. Putting a pillow under your knees while sleeping on your back can relieve the pressure on your spine.

Treat back pain. You can treat minor back pain with anti-inflammatoriy medication followed by light stretching. If pain persists, your chiropractor can recommend a treatment plan.

See a chiropractor. Getting regular chiropractic care can ensure that your spine is in good shape and improve your overall health. Research show that patients who have recovered from back pain are able to avoid recurring symptoms better when under chiropractic care.
